WAIMEA — The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) hosted its fourth track and field meet of the season Saturday on the northwest side of the island at Hawaii Preparatory Academy.
Girls
Hawaii Preparatory Academy star Elaina Head was one of the highlights of the girls field events, placing first in the high jump (5-0) and triple jump (31-11) for the fourth time this season in each respective event. The junior also placed second in the long jump with a 15-8.50 mark and fourth in the discus throw at 79-7.
Waiakea senior pole vault phenom Analissa Paresa won the event for the fourth time this season with an 11-0 mark. Paresa’s teammates — senior Ausity Urubio and freshman Aurora Bockrath — placed second and third in the same event, respectively. It was the fourth consecutive week in which there were all Waiakea competitors that finished in the top three in the pole vault event.
Kealakehe junior Layla Grace won the long jump for the third time this season at 15-8.50. Hilo senior Nariyah Suiaunoa won the shot put for the third straight week with a 29-1 mark on her second attempt.
In the running events, Konawaena’s Violet Schaut won her fourth straight 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash with a 12.72s and 25.98s time, respectively. The sophomore speedster additionally won the 400-meter dash for the first time this season in 59.41s — the fastest time by nearly five seconds, and the only finish that was under one minute.
Hilo junior Kekaimalino Halpern, who has posted nationally-ranked times this season, won the 1500-meter run in 5:21.65 and 800-meter run in 2:16.72. Halpern has won each event multiple times thus far in 2024.
Boys
In the boys field events, Kona senior Keoki Alani won his second high jump event of the season with a 5-2 mark.
Over in the pole vault, Waiakea seniors Shelbey Cabais-Fernandez (14-3) and Tallen Soi (13-0) placed first and second for the fourth straight week, adding to the school’s dominance in the event.
KS-Hawai‘i senior Kahiau Poe won his fourth long jump event of the year with a 19-7 mark. He also claimed first in the triple jump with a 40-3 distance.
Kona junior Elias Malapit won his fourth consecutive shot put with a 45-3 mark. Malapit also earned second in the discus throw, with his attempts only short to KS-Hawai‘i senior Niau Paulos, who won the event for the second time in 2024.
Malapit’s teammate, sophomore Laanui Meyers, won his third 110-meter hurdles race of the season with 16.11s time.
Poe also made noise in the running events — winning his fourth straight 100-meter dash in 11.19s.
Laupahoehoe sophomore Tazein Sykes notched his fourth win of the season in the 400-meter dash, racing in 51.63s.
In the 200-meter dash, Kona senior Carmine Taetune-Fautanu won his third race of the season — finishing in 22.71s.
